Mactan-Cebu International Airport aims Zero Carbon Emission by 2025!

Airports play a critical role in the global transportation network, facilitating the movement of passengers and cargo. However MCIAA took a major step in partnership with ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East that aims for a sustainable environmental friendly Airport.

A first in Philippines to commit for zero carbon emissions and achieve level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation program by ACI.

The MOU was signed on October 17, 2024, during the 59th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation for the Asia-Pacific Region. The signing ceremony brought together key figures in global aviation, including International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) President Salvatore Sciacchitano, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Director General Stefano Baronci, MCIAA General Manager Atty. Julius Neri, and Aboitiz InfraCapital GMCAC CEO Athanasios Titonis.

Speaking at a press conference, Baronci highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability in the aviation sector.

"In today’s world, achieving sustainability is not an option, but a necessity for the aviation industry," he said, adding that ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East is dedicated to supporting its airport members in reaching Net Zero emissions.

Baronci emphasized the industry's urgent need for decisive action to reduce its carbon footprint and to position itself for a sustainable future.

Through the Net Zero Roadmap Program, endorsed by Airport Carbon Accreditation, ACI will offer strategic guidance to assist MCIAA in its sustainability journey. This support includes crafting a structured plan with carbon footprint projections, governance frameworks, and recommendations for improving assets, fuel sources, and operations. It also covers capital expenditure planning and funding opportunities to achieve these goals.

MCIAA General Manager, Atty.  Neri expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "This collaboration will be a major boost to our sustainability initiatives. MCIAA's success has always depended on strong partnerships, particularly with our private operator, Aboitiz InfraCapital GMCAC. With ACI's expertise, we are confident that we can make significant strides towards a greener future."

Aboitiz InfraCapital GMCAC CEO Titonis reaffirmed the company's commitment to making MCIAA a model for sustainability among airports in the Philippines. He expressed hopes that MCIAA's example would inspire other airports in the country and across Asia to follow similar environmental initiatives
